Are You Suffering From A Whiplash Injury?
We often hear about people sustaining “whiplash” injuries in car accidents. A whiplash injury is an injury to the neck caused by rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck like the cracking of a whip. It commonly occurs in rear-end car crashes but can also occur as a result of a sports accident or other trauma .
Symptoms may not come on immediately following the incident. They can include neck pain and stiffness and headaches. They may require treatment with pain medication and exercise/physiotherapy and some people can experience chronic neck pain and other complications.
Most people will recover in a relatively short period of months but some people can have pain for years.
Symptoms Of Whiplash
Signs and symptoms of whiplash which usually come on in the first 24 hours after trauma may include:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Worsening of pain with neck movement
- Loss of range of motion in the neck
- Headaches, often starting at the base of the skull
- Tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back or arms
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
Less frequently people can experience:
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears ( tinnitus)
- Sleep disturbance
- Difficultly concentrating
- Memory problems
As with any injury or medical complaint it is important if you experience any neck pain or other whiplash symptoms following an accident or injury that you should see your doctor for advice. X-ray or other imaging may be required to rule out fractures or other tissue damage that may be contributing to the symptoms.
